What is an access control system?

An access control system is the modern way of managing doors, locks and access rights. However, it is generally not a way of managing keys, because keys do not actually need to be included anymore. What characterizes a modern access control system is that it is a system, and thus something that is connected and can be administered centrally. This cannot really be done if you have lent out extra keys or distributed port codes.
